Rotterdam Cultural Histories #13: The Temporary Autonomous Bureau is a space for researching and discussing interpretations of autonomy in cultural or social projects within Rotterdam. We have converted a space at TENT into a temporary office. The group consist of both students of Experimental Publishing Master at Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, and inhabitants of the Vereniging Poortgebouw,a 37-year-old organisation that hosts cultural activities, as well as a community of 30 people.

Rotterdam Cultural Histories #13: The Temporary Autonomous Bureau è uno spazio di ricerca e  discussione su interpretazioni di autonomia nei progetti culturali o sociali nella città di Rotterdam. Abbiamo convertito uno spazio nella galleria Tent in un ufficio temporaneo. Il gruppo è composto da studenti del Master in Editoria Sperimentale presso Piet Zwart Institute di Rotterdam e gli abitanti del Vereniging Poortgebouw, un'organizzazione di 37 anni che ospita attività culturali, oltre ad una comunità di 30 persone.

           

During this presentation’s three-month time frame, we used the space to organize a series of public talks, workshops, and performances that map and tell stories about the independent strategies of self-organization in Rotterdam.

Durante i tre mesi di questa presentazione, abbiamo utilizzato lo spazio per organizzare una serie di conferenze pubbliche, workshop e performance che mappano e raccontano storie sulle strategie indipendenti di auto-organizzazione a Rotterdam.

At the same time, the public had access to the fragmented Poortgebouw archive. The Temporary Autonomous Bureau serves as a meeting point where experiences with how to navigate between autonomy and institutionalization can be shared.

Allo stesso tempo, il pubblico ha avuto accesso al frammentato archivio di Poortgebouw. Il Temporary Autonomous Bureau funge da punto d’incontro in cui è possibile condividere esperienze su come navigare tra autonomia e istituzionalizzazione.

How can independent organisations maintain agency in a city where the institutionalisation of cultural and residential spaces is the norm?

Is it possible to establish sustainable, non-hierarchical, socio-cultural projects through collaborative, bottom-up practices?

Can a degree of openness and autonomy be maintained in the management of a self-organised social and cultural project?

Come possono le organizzazioni indipendenti mantenere la propria autonomia in una città dove l’istituzionalizzazione degli spazi culturali e residenziali è la norma?
È possibile stabilire progetti socio-culturali sostenibili e non gerarchici attraverso pratiche collaborative dal basso?
È possibile mantenere un certo grado di apertura e autonomia nella gestione di un progetto sociale e culturale autorganizzato?
